July 9-10, 2011 Weekend

Saturday started off with our monthly officer’s meeting for KS My Stitch. As you probably already know I always have lunch fixed for everyone and this day I prepared chicken tortilla soup and fresh pico de gallo.

It was fun to have Kaye join in on our meeting and my sister Jackie came for lunch. The meeting went well and as we were finishing up the dishes I received a phone call from our friend Melinda Hutton, she owns her own business called “Closures”. I had sent her a message telling her that Jackie and I were coming to Newton and wondered if we could stop by her studio if she was going to be there. And much to my surprise she said she was going to be there and to stop by. I was very excited to go to her studio as Jackie had been before and had driven me by there the weekend of the 4^th to show me what it looks like on the outside and I had taken some pictures. It is the cutest studio I’ve ever seen.

When we go to Newton we always stop at Charlotte’s Sew Natural; as Jackie needed to get some “Minkee” fabric to line a little “Cute as a Button Baby Jacket” she was making. Anyway when we arrived at Charlotte’s we were greeted by our cute little Breckyn

and found Charlotte with one of Jackie’s flowers from her “On the go Trio” pattern in her hair. I think the flower looked perfect in Charlotte’s hair. It’s always fun to see Jackie’s patterns in the quilt shops. Then it was time to head over to Melinda’s and we asked if Charlotte would like to go and she said that we could take Breckyn since it was time for her break.

So we kidnapped Breckyn, but not before stopping to take a picture with Breckyn and her cute as a bug Volkswagen. It’s a 1971 and Breckyn is so proud of it and I can see why.

As soon as you drive up to Melinda’s studio you know you are going to be in for a pleasurable experience. She makes jewelry from lots of things; from old buttons, typewriter keys, antique costume jewelry, and all kinds of other things she finds along the way.

When I stepped into the studio my eyes wandered to the pretty colors of thread in jars,

boxes of finished jewelry,

a button wreath,

beaded necklace valance,

drawers and drawers full of old buttons,

buckles,

muffin tins full of all sorts of things,

and a deviled egg lazy Susan full of closures and fasteners. I especially loved all the different cabinets that hold all of her things.

I really loved her necklaces made with dominoes, dice, beads, and buttons,

I also love her vase of flowers made with wire and stacked buttons. There were so many happy and fun things to look at and I’m sure I missed a lot of them too. It was so nice to be able to hang out with Breckyn, Jackie, Melinda, and Charlotte in Newton. I want to send a special thank you to Melinda for letting us invade her space for a little while.:) 

We ended the day with dinner with my sister and her husband Mark at Tanya’s Soup Kitchen and we were all pampered by their daughter and my niece Emilee. Emilee works very hard at pleasing people and I know that we aren’t the only ones who are spoiled by her. Thank you so much Emilee for being such a sweetie.

Sunday was spent having breakfast with my parents and the normal things that I do on the weekend; of laundry, ironing, cooking, and blogging. There was not much crocheting going on this weekend but I still had a nice relaxing and blessed weekend. I would love to hear all about yours now.
