June 25-26, 2011 Weekend

My weekend went very well again. I invited my good friend Rosina over to my house to teach me how to knit toe-up-two-at-a-time socks. l think I’ve mentioned this before that Rosina and I work in the same small office with around 27 people in the office, but we don’t get to talk and share much of anything while we’re at work. So it’s always nice to catch up with the things that she’s been working on and our thoughts on what we would like to make in the future.

I loved seeing her crochet baby afghan and I love the colors that she chose to use.

Here’s her cute fuzzy sweater that she knitted and I think she chose just the right kind of buttons for it too. Rosina told me that I could take pictures of her things, but I was warned not to include her in the pictures. Oops, sorry Rosina I got your feet in this one:)

I think I’ve told you all before that I like to cook too, so I wanted to make Rosina and I lunch. Since I had tried a recipe for 5 Cheese Tomato Basil Soup at my officers meeting a couple of weeks ago and it turned out really good, and I found the recipe in one of my Where Women Cook magazines. I knew it would be just the right thing to eat so that we could keep our strength up to tackle teaching me to start knitting the socks. As usual with most everything that I make I have to alter it just a little and this recipe was no different. The recipe calls for a can of whole tomatoes, tomato paste, fresh garlic, fresh basil, five different kinds of cheeses, chicken broth, sugar, heavy cream, and salt and pepper.

Well I didn’t have the fresh garlic and basil, but I did have 2 cans of garlic and basil spaghetti sauce; I used them along with a can of tomatoes and substituted Splenda for the sugar.

Of course I used everything else as the recipe and oh my gosh it turned out really good again.

Oh I almost forgot to tell you about a cool tip that I learned from my friend Susie just before the officers meeting a couple of weeks ago I asked her if she was tall enough to reach up into my cabinet; as John always seems to place the things that I use a lot really high and far back. She asked me, “Do you have any tongs?” And of course I have tongs, she said just use them to reach things like that, well I had to use them this weekend too as he put that nifty little Braun blender thingy that I use to blend the tomatoes into the soup way high and far back. I love that those tongs are useful for not only flipping fried things; especially my famous fried tacos. Now I just hope he doesn’t start hanging the tongs too high for me to reach. Ha! Ha!

Anyway the lesson was successful and I’m well on my way to making the cutest little toes of my socks. I love spending time with Rosina and being able to say more than Hi, how are you, and a quick “what are you working on?” between me taking over for her at lunch, and then a brief goodbye at the end of the day. Thank you so much Rosina for making my Saturday so special. Saturday evening I was able to warm up some of the tomato basil soup and fixed grilled cheese sandwiches for my dear daughter Jennifer before she headed off for her 3rd shift job at the hospital.

I was able to hook a few more motifs on my Japanese shawl and I’m really happy with the way the colors are coming out in each motif.

Sunday morning we met my Mom and Daddy for breakfast at their favorite little restaurant Emilias. It’s fun to see my Dad laugh at Johns stories. Doesn’t this picture just make you want to laugh, even though you don’t know what the story was? I can’t even remember what he told him but my Dad sure got a kick out of whatever it was. I finished up the day with a stack of ironing, cooking, crocheting, knitting, picture taking & blogging. I would love to hear what’s keeping you busy these days:)

  1. Aw, the pleasure was all mine, trust me! I’m so glad we could finally spend some time chatting and stitching together. And don’t you just LOVE the look of those cute little toe cups as they start growing into socks? By the way, my new needles are sooo much better than the old ones, thanks for allowing me to “drag” you to the yarn shop with me. 🙂

Lunch was delicious as usual, too! Thanks again, Tamara, for a super day!!

    • Thanks again, Rosina for stopping by and commenting and teaching me to make those cute little socks.

      Love you,
      Tamara

  2. Tamara, It sounds like you had a lovely weekend. School is finally out and I am anxious to be on the lake in our new 42′ sailboat. Well, it’s not really new, but new to us:)

I am beginning to compile my projects to take along on the boat for the next few weeks and I am looking forward to spending some time with my girls. We haven’t sailed all together in quite some time (college and jobs have a way of interfering somehow…)

Projects I am working on: a KNIT pattern for one of my crocheted tote designs, some berets for a friend who needs some fashionable head-wear due to a serious accident, a crocheted vest, which I am testing the pattern on, a shawl that I want to design and oh, did I mention BAGS? I am hooked…I SO love to crochet bags -lol!

Anyway, I miss not having had the time to chat with you, but I have been keeping up. Have a great summer, and remember that if I don’t comment, it doesn’t mean I’m not reading….just busy.

    Hugs,
    Merri

    • Hi Merri,

It’s so nice to hear from you and I’m so glad that you get to relax for a while! Oh how I would love to be in a boat on the water. I love the water and being in the water, swimming. I’m so glad to hear that you spend some time with your girls too. I’ve missed hearing from you, but somehow I knew that you were still reading my blog entries.

      Hugs,
      Tamara

  3. Busy weekend here, baptism at lake Afton with a pot luck on Saturday. Sunday, clothes shopping for Kor and Sara, a movie with some family and yard work…the time flew by.
So glad that you and Rosina got to spend some time together. I miss her. She is a very talented lady and I sure would like to glean some of that knowledge from her, myself.
I have a few projects that I am hooking, another pincushion, Elise shawl and a little mesh shirt cover. They go with me everywhere thanks to the little baskets from Twist.
Finally hoping to wrap up at least one of my little granddaughter’s dresses today……..seems to be taking me forever.
    Love your blog as always,
    Suz

    • Susie,

I always love hearing what you’ve been doing. I can hardly wait to see your projects, hopefully you won’t give them away before I get to see them:) Thank you so much for stopping by to comment. I’m glad you like my blog.

      Love & Hugs,
      Tamara

  4. 5 cheese tomato basil soup sounds amazingly delicious! I try to make a soup from scratch each week and tomato soup is actually what I made yesterday but mine was a super-lemony tomato soup with avocado and mint as toppings.

Also just wanted to say that it looks like the colors in that Japanese motif are truly coming out beautiful!

    • Kathryn,

Your tomato soup sounds interesting too. I’m not sure what it is about soup, but it’s very comforting to me. And thank you for liking the Japanese shawl colors, of course I had nothing to do with how the colors are turning out:)

      Hugs,
      Tamara

    • Chacho Aaron,

I knew you would get a laugh out of the picture of Grandpa. And I never thought that you might would like to eat breakfast at Emilia’s? I’ll have to make the tomato soup for you next time you are here, you will just have to remind me.

      Love you, the end! Momma

  6. What a really fun weekend you had Tamara! You have a really special best friend in Rosina. She could definitely pass as a sister you two are just that close and I think it’s wonderful. Rosina is very talented herself! I love that baby afghan, it’s just sweet. Your motifs are coming right along and that shawl is going to be spectacular!

    Hugs my friend XX
    Barbara

  7. Oh I forgot, I’ve got an herb garden going on this year, basil, chives, lemongrass, rosemary, oregano, dill, sage, lemon balm and thyme! Wish I lived closer so that I could give you the fresh stuff when you needed it for a new recipe!

    Hugs again my friendXX
    Barbara

    • Barb,

Thank you so much for stopping by to comment and yes Rosina is very special to me just like a sister. I wish you lived closer too, oh how I love a garden and the fresh herbs. I so love to cook with all the garden things. I hope you have a great week my friend.

      Love you,
      Tamara

  8. It looks like your shawl is off to a great start. I’m sure that as always it will look and feel marvelous. Please let me know how your socks turn out. I have a book on making socks from the toe up, but I’m skeptical that they won’t be as comfortable from the cuff down.

Also, thanks for sharing the link to, Where Women Cook. I couldn’t find the tomato soup recipe, guess I’ll have to buy a subscription. But, I found a several other scrumptious recipes, including several from the chocolate food group. ;D

    Cheers! ❤

    • Heather,

Thanks for stopping by to comment and I am having fun knitting my socks. I’m really liking the thought of having both of them done at the same time too:)

I’m glad that you like the Where Women Cook website. I’m sorry that they don’t have the Tomato Basil Soup recipe on it though. The issue I think was the second one that they published with Rae Drummond the Pioneer Woman on the front cover. If you go to the website I think you can still order the back issues.

      Hugs,
      Tamara
