August 31-September 1, 2013 Weekend, Blocking my Afghan, a New Project in Progress, Dinner with Family, another Scarf and Minion Hat

1

Well here’s a recap of my weekend. First off on Saturday I decided to step away from the minion hats for a little while to block my afghan that I will be entering into the Kansas State Fair. I’m not sure how many pins I had to use but it was 3 pincushions full. I was a little disappointed in the way that the blocking didn’t completely take care of the ruffled edge but it’s going in the fair anyway.  🙂  While I was blocking my afghan we received a call from John’s sister to see if we wanted to come over for dinner, so I had John run to the store for a few items. When he arrived home I plopped a 10 lb bag of potatoes in pots and a dozen eggs for my famous potato salad. I also applied rib rub to 2 racks of baby back ribs. After I prepared the potato salad and while the ribs simmered away in the oven, I went back upstairs to start on another project.

2

While I was moving back and forth in and out of my craft room (while blocking my afghan) I kept seeing this wool sweater that I had gotten from my friend Susie some time back. I knew I wanted to put it on the back of my crocheted flower motif.

3

My plans were to make the flower motif and wool into a trivet or hot pad. So I was in search of something that I could trace around to make a circle. I know there is probably an instrument of some kind that you can purchase to cut out a circle but I usually make do with what I already have, and that’s where my pizza pans come in handy quite often for me. When I get into these projects I may know what I kind of want to happen but I don’t always know exactly how I’m going to complete it. I guess that’s where the designer comes out in me.

4

Next I decided that my trivet needed some fabric, so I cut a circle out bigger than the wool piece thinking that I could turn up the edges to come to the front of the piece. I knew my Sister sometimes uses that method to put an edging around a quilt. But I found out the hard way that it doesn’t work on a circle, so I had to come up with a Plan B. After trimming the fabric even with the wool piece I knew what had to be done;

5

I found a coordinating dotted fabric in my stash and cut a bias strip and sewed it all around. And, this is as far as I got before we had to get ready to go to the family gathering. I will show you the finished project as soon as I get back to it.

6

After picking up John’s oldest sister Helen we arrived at his sister Andrea’s house.

Same as with my family get-togethers everyone starts in the kitchen and around the dining room table. (my nephew Ben and sister-in-law Ricci clowning in the kitchen)

8

I couldn’t go without taking a family photo of John with his sisters; Ricci, Andrea, and Helen.

9

It’s always nice getting together with John’s family sitting and visiting. They have somehow accepted me as I am and understand that I have to have my hands active at all times and Saturday was no different as you can see I have a little pink crochet something in my lap.  🙂

10

Sunday I slept in (until 7) and when I went to pick up my crocheting I didn’t want to start back up on the yellow hat that I had started on Saturday morning. So-o-o-o I instead decided to pick up the pink crochet something that I was working on Saturday evening. And the little pink something was another scarf from Jill’s pattern and I’m happy to say that I finished it late Sunday morning.

11

After John had taken the pictures of my first scarf that I had made from Jill’s pattern; I thought that it might be kind of cool to stand up on the tree stump that was left from our white pine tree and that way I could show you a little better how the scarf looks all stretched out.

12

Most of you don’t know this about me but I am scared of heights and why I thought that I would be comfortable up on this stump is beyond me. Anyway after getting a stepstool right next to the stump and having John come over so that I had something else to hold on to I got up on the stump and after he wanted me to turn a little (how was I to do that when I was shaking so badly) he proceeded to take pictures of me standing on the stump.

13

I still can’t believe how long it took him and why didn’t he tell me that I had a wedgy? I was never so thankful to be on the ground again as when he helped me down off of that stump. Anyway, long story short I think he captured what I wanted him to and thank God I have this wonderful ability to crop unwanted things out of photos (like wedgies). 😉

14

We ended the day with a couple of Joshua’s friends; Melissa and Nathan stopping by to pick up the minion hat that she ordered for her Step Mom. And there you have it, another weekend gone by, but oh wait there is one more day to my weekend and that’s today because it’s Labor Day and I have the day off, plus it is my Megan’s 11th birthday. It is so hard to believe that 11 years ago today she was born, and it was on Labor Day as well. Stay tuned…more to come on that later.

  1. Love your colorful afghan and I know your glad you have it finished and I know it will come in best of show at the Kansas state fair. The family dinner looks like so much fun. Are there only 4 siblings left in Johns family? I understand your fear of heights. I have that same fear and someday I want to go ziplining to see if I can conquer that fear. I know it doesn’t make any sense either. I love you girl and have a great week. sw

    • Thanks so much Sue for loving my afghan and as for winning; we will see. I’m sure there will be lots of lovely afghans there too. If I am fortunate enough to place you probably will hear me scream clear down in Oklahoma. 🙂 I can’t wait to hear about your zip line adventure. Good luck with that. Love you, Tamara

  2. Great family pictures, Tamara!.. And I had to smile about the pizza pan! You’re not alone!.. I don’t know HOW many times I’ve run around this house, looking for the perfect sized circle to trace, for one project or another!.. Still loving that minion hat! I’m thinking about trying my hand at that and maybe a couple of owl hats. (To my surprise, Dear Daughter has a bigger like for minions than I realized. She asked me to paint one for her classroom, so I’ll see if I can get to that today, I hope.)… Best Happy Birthday wishes to Megan! Oh my gosh, what grade is she going into now?!

    • Hi Tina!

Thank you so much for stopping by to comment and for the Happy Birthday wishes to my Megan. She is in the 5th grade this year. They grow up way too fast.

      Love and Hugs, Tamara

  3. Now that I think of it, could you tell me the source of your minion hat pattern? I see several versions, and I just really love the way yours are coming out.

  4. Wowza, Miss Tamara!! Your afghan is definitely a winner!! So gorgeous!! .. When I first looked at the photo, I thought you had beads around the edges; then I realized they are your lovely “blocking pins”. tee-hee!
Can’t wait to see your completed project with your beautiful flower motif. You sure do know how to “work things out”. 🙂
What a gorgeous home Andrea has — and I love that she is on the end of a cul-de-sac.
Got a real kick out of the pics of you modeling “Jill’s Scarf” on that tall stump. I was thinking that NO WAY would I feel comfy up there … not becuz of a fear of heights but becuz of my arthritis ‘all over’ — *and* my clumsiness. I just would not trust myself to not lose my balance & take a tumble.
Got a good laugh out of your wedgie comment. I thought: “I don’t see a wedgie” — and then I read that you did not include that photo. RITCMOL!! 😀
    HAPPY, FUN-FILLED 11th BIRTHDAY TO MEGAN!!! ❤
    Love 'n Smiles ~

    • Hi Kat!

Thanks so much for loving the things that I do and the heights that I go to, to get the right photo. 🙂 I’m glad the photo didn’t show how nervous I actually was. Love you my friend!

      Tamara

  5. LOVE the scarf, The blanket is beautiful.
I know the judges will give you great reviews and it’s already a winner.
I have not had the nerve (or what ever else it takes) to enter any of my “creations” in the fair. Maybe someday. See you at Guild.

    • Hi Linda!

Thanks so much for loving my afghan and the things that I make. You should definitely try entering something that you are extra proud of.

      See you soon! Tamara

  6. I love your afghan and flower. The afghan looks amazing with all the colours, so much work. The layers on your flower make it look amazing. Good for you standing on that log when you are not happy. You cannot tell. Your weekends always seem so lovely with lots of family times. They sound so ideal.

    • Oh Alice Thanks so much for loving my afghan and all the things that I do. As for my weekends; I try to hit on the highlights that are lovely and leave out some of the bad things (if they occur). HAHAHAHAHA! As always thank you so much for stopping by to comment. It always makes my day. 🙂

  7. Great pics, especially of you on the stump. ROFL. You’re so sweet to make more of my scarves, there must be a gazillion scarf patterns out there! It looks lovely in pinks, and I must try it myself in a non-cotton yarn one of these days. Have a great weekend, Miss Tamara. xxx

    • Thanks so much for stopping by to comment and for laughing at me on the stump. 😉 I loved making your scarf pattern up and I wanted to let you know that the yarn that I used was Berocco Weekend DK weight. It is a combination of cotton and acrylic and is very soft. I hope you have a good weekend as well. Love, Tamara
