August 31-September 1, 2013 Weekend, Blocking my Afghan, a New Project in Progress, Dinner with Family, another Scarf and Minion Hat

Well here’s a recap of my weekend. First off on Saturday I decided to step away from the minion hats for a little while to block my afghan that I will be entering into the Kansas State Fair. I’m not sure how many pins I had to use but it was 3 pincushions full. I was a little disappointed in the way that the blocking didn’t completely take care of the ruffled edge but it’s going in the fair anyway.  🙂  While I was blocking my afghan we received a call from John’s sister to see if we wanted to come over for dinner, so I had John run to the store for a few items. When he arrived home I plopped a 10 lb bag of potatoes in pots and a dozen eggs for my famous potato salad. I also applied rib rub to 2 racks of baby back ribs. After I prepared the potato salad and while the ribs simmered away in the oven, I went back upstairs to start on another project.

While I was moving back and forth in and out of my craft room (while blocking my afghan) I kept seeing this wool sweater that I had gotten from my friend Susie some time back. I knew I wanted to put it on the back of my crocheted flower motif.

My plans were to make the flower motif and wool into a trivet or hot pad. So I was in search of something that I could trace around to make a circle. I know there is probably an instrument of some kind that you can purchase to cut out a circle but I usually make do with what I already have, and that’s where my pizza pans come in handy quite often for me. When I get into these projects I may know what I kind of want to happen but I don’t always know exactly how I’m going to complete it. I guess that’s where the designer comes out in me.

Next I decided that my trivet needed some fabric, so I cut a circle out bigger than the wool piece thinking that I could turn up the edges to come to the front of the piece. I knew my Sister sometimes uses that method to put an edging around a quilt. But I found out the hard way that it doesn’t work on a circle, so I had to come up with a Plan B. After trimming the fabric even with the wool piece I knew what had to be done;

I found a coordinating dotted fabric in my stash and cut a bias strip and sewed it all around. And, this is as far as I got before we had to get ready to go to the family gathering. I will show you the finished project as soon as I get back to it.

After picking up John’s oldest sister Helen we arrived at his sister Andrea’s house.

Same as with my family get-togethers everyone starts in the kitchen and around the dining room table. (my nephew Ben and sister-in-law Ricci clowning in the kitchen)

I couldn’t go without taking a family photo of John with his sisters; Ricci, Andrea, and Helen.

It’s always nice getting together with John’s family sitting and visiting. They have somehow accepted me as I am and understand that I have to have my hands active at all times and Saturday was no different as you can see I have a little pink crochet something in my lap.  🙂

Sunday I slept in (until 7) and when I went to pick up my crocheting I didn’t want to start back up on the yellow hat that I had started on Saturday morning. So-o-o-o I instead decided to pick up the pink crochet something that I was working on Saturday evening. And the little pink something was another scarf from Jill’s pattern and I’m happy to say that I finished it late Sunday morning.

After John had taken the pictures of my first scarf that I had made from Jill’s pattern; I thought that it might be kind of cool to stand up on the tree stump that was left from our white pine tree and that way I could show you a little better how the scarf looks all stretched out.

Most of you don’t know this about me but I am scared of heights and why I thought that I would be comfortable up on this stump is beyond me. Anyway after getting a stepstool right next to the stump and having John come over so that I had something else to hold on to I got up on the stump and after he wanted me to turn a little (how was I to do that when I was shaking so badly) he proceeded to take pictures of me standing on the stump.

I still can’t believe how long it took him and why didn’t he tell me that I had a wedgy? I was never so thankful to be on the ground again as when he helped me down off of that stump. Anyway, long story short I think he captured what I wanted him to and thank God I have this wonderful ability to crop unwanted things out of photos (like wedgies). 😉

We ended the day with a couple of Joshua’s friends; Melissa and Nathan stopping by to pick up the minion hat that she ordered for her Step Mom. And there you have it, another weekend gone by, but oh wait there is one more day to my weekend and that’s today because it’s Labor Day and I have the day off, plus it is my Megan’s 11^th birthday. It is so hard to believe that 11 years ago today she was born, and it was on Labor Day as well. Stay tuned…more to come on that later.
